Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
After completing training: 

  1. Consult with students in writing basics during one-on-one sessions.
  2. Create documents of various forms for WC workshops and presentations.
  3. Assist in workshops and other presentation as needed.
  4. Assist director in operation of the Writing Center as needed.
  5. Perform other duties as required by the Director of the Writing Center.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Assist students in reaching proficiency in writing skills by demonstrationg various skills.
  2. Provide students with written samples of exceptional written material for them to study.
  3. Maintain records of student achievement in mastery of writing skills.
  4. Performs secretarial and clerical duties such as filing, typing, photo copying, word processing, mailing, maintaining records, in accordance with established policies and procedures. 
  5. Performs receptionists duties including answering the telephone and taking messages, and greeting office visitors. 
  6. Run campus errands.

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • Minimum of an associate degree and grade of an A in both English Composition 1 and 2.
  • Some college writing tutoring experience.
Preferred:
  • Strong academic writing background in areas such as English, communications, business, psychology, the social sciences, or the natural sciences. 
  • Tutoring in any area
  • Tutoring multilingual students

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Employee should be skilled in the use of the written word, either in English or Spanish as well as use of a personal computer and basic computer software as well as knowledge in the use of various office machines.
  • Good conversational skills in person and by telephone. 
  • Employee shall have the ability to organize various activities assigned to them and the abitlity to work with other personnel in a courteous and professional manner. 
  • This inclused the ability to meet deadlines with minimal supervision. 

Additional Information

Supervision Received
Supervised by the Director of the Writing Center and Writing Support Specialist.

Physical Requirements 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a standard office environment.
Work-inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Safety 
Required to work safely and follow safety rules.

Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.

Special Conditions
Immediate supervisor may assign other duties.
May be required to work outside regular working hours, as needed.
May be required to work at a different college work site or campus as needed.
Tutor may be expected to work evenings or weekends as needed.
