Job Description
BOOKSELLER, MIT Press, to perform varied, sometimes complex customer service, sales, merchandising, and clerical duties in a fast-paced and self-motivated retail bookstore on the MIT campus; assist customers in finding books in person and over the phone and email, maintaining a professional, helpful, positive attitude in all situations; assist campus visitors in locating neighborhood resources; fulfill orders placed through the store website, including shipping orders using USPS, FedEx, and UPS; proficiently perform cashier duties using the point-of-sale system; follow all store sales policies, including those regarding cash handling, and credit card data security; develop knowledge of MIT Press publications and related subject areas; and assist with store opening and closing; and independently represent the bookstore at off-site events, including events happening outside regular business hours.
Job Requirements:REQUIRED: High school diploma or equivalent; high organizational and communication skills and attention to detail; knowledge of Windows, Excel, Outlook or another email program; ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment, and discreetly handle confidential information and situations. PREFERRED: One year minimum bookstore or other retail work; familiarity with MIT Press publications; interest in scholarly publishing; and a basic understanding of the Press's scholarly disciplines (e.g., science, technology, linguistics, computer science, design).
Will be required to stand for extended periods, regularly, repeatedly lift up to 40lbs, climb ladders, bend, crouch, and kneel.
Flexible scheduling and weekend availability required. Current MIT Press Bookstore hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 am until 6:00 pm; hours are subject to change as business dictates.
